My family and I took off on a small speedboat towards Moofushi in hopes of seeing 50 Manta Rays. These mantas had been spotted at this site for a couple days before we went and so we had good chances of seeing them. Unfortunately, they were not there when we arrived via speedboat. The good news is we did see a couple of Manta Rays and had a good experience on the boat. Even better, two of the Manta Rays we saw at this site were new to the Manta Trust database, so we got to give them a name.

Cost

I want to discuss cost first, since a private tour is not cheap. It costs around $900 for my entire family to go on the trip. I think no matter what it is $900. Food is included on the tour (breakfast but we requested some lunch as well) as well as drinks such as milk, orange juice, coffee, and tea.
Sound expensive? I agree but the good news is if you find another family you want to go with (or anyone else you want to go with) the cost is still $900 total and you guys can split it to help break it up.

What to do

So, it’s your tour… what should you do? My answer is everything. The tour leaves at 7:45 am and you will return around 12:30-1:00 in the afternoon. In the meantime, pack as much in as possible.
Some people go out just for a private Whale Shark snorkel. Some do mantas. Some get lucky and do both. Since we went to Moofushi which is far away even by speedboat, we limited ourselves on where else we had time to go when the 50 mantas were not there. We got lucky to see the mantas we saw.
If I were going to do a private tour again, I would do Moofushi because the only way you can access that site is by speedboat. They are known for Manta Rays and it is different than where Centara takes their daily tours. I also would then head straight to Whale Shark or stop on the way to see if they are around. I think that is the best use of private tour dollars.
