Explore the City of Male, Maldives: A Cultural Journey Through Historic Sites, Markets, and Island Life

What an experience! My friend Maria and I hopped the ferry that took us from Hulhumale to Male for $1 USD one way. Then we walked probably 10 miles and 5 hours exploring the city of Male before ending the day with a delicious lunch. 

Exploring the city

All I have to say here is be ready to WALK! Heavy bags are not a good idea (from experience) unless you want to experience severe back pain. The scenery is beautiful though and very culturally rich. 

Shopping 

The venders can smell tourists and are out on the street asking you to come into their shops. Each store is different but has similar products. Like shopping on local islands, don’t get discouraged if one shop doesn’t have your size because a different one probably will. 
The necklaces became my favorite thing to shop for. They are made of stones and are all different length and sizes. TIP: just because two necklaces look like the same length, hold each of them up next to each other. For someone who likes short necklaces, I found that there were five of “the same necklace” but they were all made a little differently and therefore had different lengths. 

Lunch 

We ate lunch at Lemongrass. It’s directly on the water and has incredible food. The place was recommended by a local named Kamey and all the locals know the place. I ordered butter chicken (fantastic) and my friend Maria ordered tuna rice.
