Did you know Florida has been determined a nursery habitat for manta rays? It's true! Juvenile Caribbean manta rays (a newly described third species) shelter in the shallows of Florida. These rays are so close to shire they can sometimes be visible from the beach. Such a close proximity makes these rays vulnerable to boat strikes and fishing line entanglement. Many people don't know manta rays are in the area, so they aren't watching out. This image depicts a manta ray just below the surface, shot near a south Florida inlet, showing you never know what's below.

Acropora corals pack the reefs of south Maldives. Acroporas are hard corals. They build a skeleton made of calcium carbonate and form reefs around the world. These corals harbor a mutually symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae which carries out the process of photosynthesis to feed the coral. Together with phytoplankton in the ocean, zooxanthellae helps to provide over 70% of the oxygen we breathe. Here, you can see the beautiful colors and shapes of the acropora corals of the Maldives.

Raja Ampat, located in the coral triangle, lies in the heart of the world's marine biodiversity. Fun fact: throughout geological time, the heart of marine biodiversity has actually shifted around different places on Earth. At one point, the Caribbean Sea held the planets most diversity, but presently, Raja Ampat and the coral triangle carries the title. This area sparkles with color. As I set up to shoot the multitude of soft coral and sponges here, the glass fish moved in out of nowhere, and seemingly disappeared a few minutes later, illustrating the spontaneous magic of our ocean.
